Reflecting on our journey, it’s hard to believe how far we’ve come since we first planted heritage (also commonly called heirloom) mums on the farm. Those early blooms marked a turning point for us—a moment that sparked our passion for preserving and sharing these unique, rare varieties.
Why Heritage Mums Matter
In an era where over 80% of flowers in the United States are imported, we recognized a need for something different. That’s where The Mum Project comes into play. This initiative allows us to share heirloom plants with farmers across the country, making these hard-to-find varieties accessible to more people. Our goal is to help meet the growing demand for domestically grown flowers while celebrating the beauty and history of heirloom chrysanthemums.
Extending the Growing Season
One of the standout features of heirloom mums is their ability to extend the growing season. While many farms typically wind down after the first frost takes out the dahlias, heirloom mums step in and keep gardens vibrant and colorful well into the fall. This unique quality makes them the perfect late-season bloom, providing a burst of life when many other flowers have come to an end. 🍂
